Make Your New House Feel Like Home

Congrats on purchasing a new house! It can be such an enriching experience to buy and design your home décor to match your tastes and style.

It can also be challenging to make a new house (whether that’s new build or just new to you) feel like your home. This is especially true if you had previously settled in and made your old place of residence your true home base. The furniture or décor items you had in your old place may not feel right in your new place or may just not fit with the new style you’re going for. And any new things you put in your new house may not feel “homey” to you right away.

Or if you’ve been living in more temporary housing like an apartment or renting a home before now, you may feel unsure how to make your new house feel like the home you’ve always wanted. If you’re used to relocating or not being able to make big decorating or design decisions due to not being the owner of your space, it can be intimidating to undertake the task of making a house into a home.

We all want to feel at home when we’re at home. We want to feel like our space fits who we are and what we like. We want to feel able to be our true selves and show our true colors (whether those colors are neutral, bold, or sparkly) in the place we call home.

We all want to feel at home when we’re at home. We want to feel like our space fits who we are and what we like. We want to feel able to be our true selves and show our true colors (whether those colors are neutral, bold, or sparkly) in the place we call home.

Perhaps the key to making a new space feel like home has less to do with what exactly we put in it and more to do with how we feel and think about the space we’re in. Mindset can have a big impact on how we feel about our surroundings. Our emotional connection to a space can be the difference between a house feeling like just a house and a house feeling like our home.

So how can you help yourself and your loved ones make an emotional connection to your new home? Here are some tips:

1. Find materials/fabrics that make you feel most at home and implement those materials into your new home décor:

Do you love soft, fuzzy fabrics or smooth, silky fabrics?

Do you touch flannel and feel at home? Or does fleece make you settle in?

Do you prefer linen or cotton to heavier fabrics?

Whatever fabrics and furniture materials feel the most “homey” to you, implement those fabrics into your home décor. All our favorite fabrics come in a host of colors and patterns, so no matter what general look you’re going for, you’ll be able to find a color or pattern in your favorite materials to match your style.

Personally, I love soft fabrics that I can cozy up in—especially during the cold winter days. I also love silkier and smooth fabrics that don’t feel hot during the summer months. Combining those two fabric types in my décor with smooth furniture fabrics and bedding and adding fuzzy/soft blankets, throw pillows, and rugs helps make me feel truly at home.

2. Learn which colors make you feel calm, stable, centered, and serene and incorporate them into your home décor:

Does the color pink make you feel calm or set you on edge? Does black make you feel centered or like you’re wandering into oblivion?

White? Is it a color of calm and serenity or does it “scream” hospital to you? Does sea blue make you feel like a calm day at the lake or does it make you feel sea sick?

Everyone has color preferences, and there are certain colors that have been shown to inspire specific emotions. I’m a big believer in opting for colors that attract you and make you feel calm. Our homes in general should reflect our comfort zone.

We should be able to feel safe and centered in our homes and feel stabilized the minute we walk in after being out in the chaotic world.

In order to create that atmosphere of calm stability in my home, I use ivory, taupe, dusty pink, and rich burgundy colors, add a pop of natural greens and wood with succulents and décor pieces, and use gold and rose gold metallic accents. The neutral colors help me feel serene and put together, and building on those neutrals with muted pinks and reds brings depth and warmth to my décor.

Pulling a bit of nature into my home with green plants and wood pieces helps bring the calming influence of nature indoors. By adding a pop of metallic here and there, I bring a spark of energy that is invigorating without being overwhelming.

3. Use fragrance to inspire positive emotion and association with your new house:

Experts say our sense of smell is the most direct link to memory and emotion. I can think of no better way to create a positive emotional connection to your new home than through the use of fragrance.

Do floral fragrances, the aromas of baked goods, spiced or herbal fragrances, or fresh and fruity scents make you feel most at home?

My favorite homey fragrance combinations shift throughout the year, so I tailor my home fragrance picks to the season and what emotions I’m trying to evoke.

In the warmer seasons, I love fresh aromas like melon, lavender, orange, peppermint, and green tea. I often feel overwhelmed in the warmer seasons due to an endless list of activities I want to do and tasks I want to accomplish before it gets cold again. That’s why I need to include calming and invigorating aromas in my home fragrance kit to help me feel at home in the summer time.

Lavender is my go-to calming fragrance. I diffuse it every night when I sleep to help encourage peace and restful sleep. I love to diffuse Belle Aroma® Organic Lavender Essential oil in my diffuser on my bedside table. Fresh cut melon, sweet orange, peppermint, and green tea are great additions to every room in my home during the summer because they help me feel refreshed, energized, and able to go out into the world with a clear head. I use Belle Aroma® Essential oils and No-Mess Fragrance Tarts™ for wax warmers to fill my home with fresh, summery fragrances that make me feel at home.

In the fall, apple orchard, pumpkin spice, and brown sugar biscotti are my go-to’s. As it starts to get cool, I often feel a little on-edge. I seem to be more alert and feeling more cautious and alert. Unfortunately, being at a higher level of stress like that for a long period of time can negatively affect our immune systems, which is the exact opposite of what we want to do during the colder months of the year!

To help me feel more secure and at peace during the fall as the weather begins to change, I opt for aromas that inspire feelings of warmth and seasonal spirit. I love to use the No-Mess Fragrance Tarts™ in my ScenTrio® Wax Warmers in the fall. Brown Sugar Biscotti is my top pick for the wax warmer in my kitchen and I always opt for Pumpkin & Spice in my living room in the fall. I also use Apple Orchard No-Mess Fragrance Tarts™ in my Gold Plugables® Wax Warmer Fragrance Vase in the bathroom that doubles as a night light. The warm, comforting seasonal fragrances help me feel at ease in my home as the weather starts to turn cold.

And for the holidays, I love to add evergreen/pine grove, vanilla bourbon, and other rich and cozy aromas to my fall and winter fragrance combos. The holidays bring memories of being with family and feeling cozy at home by the decorated tree and the fireplace. When I use Evergreen No-Mess Tarts™ in my wax warmers, I amplify those memories and feel instantly at ease in my new home.

Nothing says “welcome home for the holidays” to me like Vanilla Bourbon No-Mess Tarts™ in my wax warmers. Vanilla is one of the most comforting and familiar fragrances available, so adding it to your fragrance collection in your new house is sure to help you feel right at home.
