By the time we finally boarded our international flight, stress levels were running high. Nearly ten hours later, after driving to St. Louis, navigating airports, and crossing the Atlantic, we had essentially been awake for almost twenty-four hours straight.
At that point, I wasn’t thinking about sightseeing.
I was thinking about getting to the hotel room, unpacking, and relaxing.
A Familiar Comfort Far from Home

Another memorable stop was Trevi Fountain, which I had always associated with the movie Three Coins in the Fountain. The beautiful Baroque fountain sits at the meeting point of three streets — “Tre Vie,” meaning “three ways.” We skipped tossing coins into the fountain ourselves, but we later learned that more than one million euros are collected from the fountain annually and used to support charitable causes throughout Rome.
But no matter how exciting the sightseeing was, one thing remained constant throughout the trip: after long days exploring busy streets, museums, and historical sites, returning to a hotel room filled with a familiar, calming fragrance felt like a small luxury.
