The Scented Kitchen: A Breath of Spring, Fresh Scents & a Simple Smoked Salmon Dip

It’s funny how things ingrained at a young age become such a part of your life that even when the reason disappears, the habit remains.

For me, it’s checking the weather.

When my dad was a telephone lineman, we watched the weather.
When he worked as a roofer, we watched the weather.
When David installed siding, we watched the weather.

Our livelihood depended on it.

When David eventually learned a trade that didn’t rely on sunshine or clear skies, we were thrilled. No more watching the forecast like our next paycheck depended on it.

And yet… here we are, retired and still checking the weather every morning.

Old habits die hard.

Maybe that’s why we still find ourselves chasing sunshine whenever we can. On our recent trip south toward the ocean, the sunshine was a little elusive for the first couple of days — but we finally found it.

And that brings me to this week’s recipe — a simple smoked salmon dip that’s perfect for entertaining or enjoying as a light appetizer at home.

But first, let’s talk about setting the mood in the kitchen.

Setting the Stage for a Fresh Kitchen

Anytime you’re preparing something like smoked salmon dip, your kitchen can quickly become… well, a little fishy smelling.

Not exactly the welcoming atmosphere you want when guests are arriving.

So before I even opened the salmon, I plugged in my Belle Aroma® Esprit de Fleur™ Essential Oil Diffuser in the Light Stone finish — also available in a Dark Stone option for a deeper, more dramatic look — and a bottle of Belle Aroma® Rose Geranium Pure Essential Oil.

Within minutes my kitchen smelled fresh, bright, and floral — the perfect complement to the fresh flowers on my counter.

From a retailer’s perspective, the Esprit de Fleur Essential Oil Diffuser is one of those products customers quickly fall in love with once they experience it.

Its compact footprint — just 4.5” wide by 6” tall — makes it easy to place almost anywhere in the home. On a kitchen counter, bathroom vanity, bedside table, or office desk, it blends beautifully with nearly any décor style.

Even better, it offers three cycle settings, allowing users to customize their fragrance experience throughout the day. A single 10ml bottle of essential oil can last up to 80 days, making it both convenient and economical.

Because the Esprit de Fleur diffuser uses pure oil diffusion without water or heat, customers enjoy the full integrity of the essential oil — no dilution and no messy water tanks to refill.

Those are the kinds of features customers recognize — and appreciate — right away.

A Little Cold Snap Inspiration

While catching the weather on the local news recently, I saw that although we had enjoyed a beautiful 77° day just five days earlier, a surprise cold snap was headed our way.

The next morning I woke up to 17° with a wind chill of -3°.

Spring clearly wasn’t quite ready to stay.

Knowing my daffodils might not appreciate the sudden chill, I went outside and gathered a small bouquet along with some flowering quince and forsythia. I just couldn’t bear the thought of those cheerful blooms getting nipped by the cold.

David even checked the heater in his greenhouse to make sure his plants would survive the overnight freeze.

Inside the house, the Rose Geranium essential oil I was diffusing paired beautifully with the fresh flowers on my counter.

It felt like a little preview of spring.

A Recipe Inspired by the Road

While we were chasing sunshine last month, we noticed several coastal restaurants serving smoked tuna dip as an appetizer.

One proudly advertised that their tuna had “never seen the inside of a can.” It was fresh and lightly smoked, but honestly, it wasn’t quite what I expected.

The next restaurant served a version that I’m fairly certain came from canned tuna — but it had a stronger smoky flavor that I actually preferred.

When we returned home, I didn’t have tuna in my pantry, but I did find a recipe for salmon dip from a friend tucked inside my recipe box.

With a few tweaks, I recreated the flavor I loved.

Smoked Salmon Dip

Ingredients

1 (15 oz) can wild caught salmon
1 block cream cheese
1 Tbsp dried minced onion
1 capful liquid smoke
Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning

Instructions

Drain the liquid from the salmon and remove the skin. Leave the small bones — they’re rich in calcium and completely dissolve into the dip without affecting flavor.

Add the cream cheese, minced onion, and liquid smoke. Mix until fully incorporated. (Allowing the cream cheese to soften first helps, but it isn’t required.)

Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning over the top to taste.

Serve with crackers, celery, cucumber slices, or your favorite fresh vegetables.

It’s simple, smoky, and always disappears quickly.
