We’re well into a season filled with gatherings, and one of our favorite traditions revolves around sharing a meal with others. Among our friends, we’ve created a rotation for hosting guest speakers from church—whether they’re traveling through or part of our local community.
We’re divided into four groups of about 25 people, and when it’s your turn to host… let’s just say no one leaves hungry.
This past Sunday’s theme was BBQ, and the spread was nothing short of incredible. Ribs, BBQ chicken, pulled pork—so many delicious options that we were running out of room on the table. Alongside the main dishes were all the favorites: potato salad, baked beans, pasta salad, fresh vegetables and dip, deviled eggs, and even spoon bread. And don’t get me started on the dessert bar—this group knocked it out of the park!
Of course, we could take our guests out to eat, but there’s something special about gathering this way. It creates space for conversation, connection, and the kind of memories that linger long after the plates are cleared. This particular family—parents and their four children—will be one we remember for a long time.
Preparing the Kitchen (and the Mood)
I did most of my cooking on Saturday, with David lending a hand here and there. Before I even began, I pulled out a treasure I’ve held onto for years—my recipe box from when I was in the 8th grade.
At just 12 years old, I decided I wanted to preserve some of my mom’s recipes. I didn’t know then just how meaningful that little box would become, but this week’s recipe is one of those cherished favorites.
Before diving into the cooking, I always like to set the mood in my kitchen—and this time was no different.
The Belle Aroma® Fleur Aromatique™ Fragrance Diffuser created a soft, welcoming atmosphere that made the entire process feel calm and intentional. There’s something about a gentle, natural fragrance that turns everyday cooking into an experience.
Each set features three delicate sola wood aroma flowers, handcrafted from natural plant fibers and designed to slowly absorb and release fragrance into the air using 100% premium essential and plant-based oils. It’s a beautiful, effortless way to bring both scent and style into any space—whether displayed on a coffee table, bedside table, or tucked into a cozy kitchen corner.
What’s Included:
- 3 handcrafted sola wood aroma flowers – natural, lightweight, and beautifully detailed
- 3 decorative bamboo collars – simple, elegant accents

Together, these elements create a simple, elevated way to bring fragrance into the home—one that feels just as thoughtful and intentional as the recipes we return to again and again. With that same sense of care in mind, I turned to one of my most cherished favorites.
A Recipe Rooted in Resourcefulness
Mom’s Baked Beans take me back to our early years in Kentucky in the 1970s. Times were lean, though I didn’t realize it back then.
We’d have “white beans” and cornbread one day, and then a day or two later, those same beans would transform into something entirely new—rich, flavorful baked beans that felt like a completely different meal.
Looking back, I appreciate my mom’s creativity and resourcefulness in the kitchen. She had a way of turning simple ingredients into something comforting and memorable—and that’s exactly what this recipe represents.
Mom’s Baked Beans (Serves 8–10)
Ingredients
- 1 lb dry navy beans (or plain canned beans as a shortcut)
- 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup (or BBQ sauce for a deeper flavor)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 1/8 cup molasses
- 1/8 cup pure maple syrup
- A drizzle of maple flavoring
- 1 tsp cinnamon (adjust to taste)
Optional: Bacon can be added, though I typically keep these vegetarian.
Directions
If using dry beans, cook them first. (Instant Pot users can skip soaking; otherwise soak overnight or use a quick soak method.) Once cooked, drain completely.
Add the beans to a pot or baking dish and mix in the remaining ingredients.
These measurements are approximate—this is one of those recipes that evolves over time and can be adjusted to your taste.
One thing you don’t want to skip is the cinnamon. Mom learned that little trick from her Norwegian neighbor, and it’s what gives these beans their unique warmth and depth.
Cook in a crockpot for a couple of hours, or bake at 350° for about 45 minutes.
