Have you ever had one of those weeks when you think, I’ve just got to get away?
That was actually our last two weeks.
It started on a Saturday evening when Tosh, our beloved Yorkie, was in the garden with David. She kept going to the fence asking him to put her over so she could go play with Dunkey, our neighbor’s 32-year-old white donkey.
If you’re a dog owner, you know they “talk” to us—and somehow, we know exactly what they want.
Of course, David told her no. The next thing he knew, Tosh had found a hole in the fence and was in the pasture with Dunkey, who was stomping and snorting. Tosh screamed, and David jumped the fence to rescue her.
Thankfully, Dunkey had only grazed her hip and leg, and no bones were broken. But Tosh was sore and traumatized. For two days, she didn’t even bark.
I think she honestly believed Dunkey was her friend. After all, I’d been feeding him apples and treats from behind Tosh’s little privacy fence. Apparently, she thought that meant they should play together.
Donkeys don’t play. At least this particular grumpy old man didn’t!
Unfortunately, the medication Tosh was given for pain and inflammation made her very sick. After three sleepless nights, we took her to a veterinarian who specialized in small animals. They quickly determined that the medication had wreaked havoc on her digestive system.
After starting probiotics and other gut-supporting supplements, within 48 hours we began seeing glimpses of our little Toshi again.
Boy, did we feel like we had all dodged a bullet!
Time for a Change of Scenery
Needless to say, our nerves needed a reset.
With the garden in full swing, we didn’t want to be gone long, so we decided on a day trip to Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas.

We also visited Hot Springs Mountain Tower, where an elevator takes you 216 feet up to an observation deck with panoramic views of the surrounding Ouachita Mountains.
Of course, Tosh needed an adventure of her own.
Hot Springs National Park has pet-friendly trails, so we headed out for a hike. By this point, Tosh was almost back to her normal self. Eventually, those little Yorkie legs gave out and we carried her part of the way back.
After the week we’d had, we were simply grateful she was there for us to carry.
