Scents of Adventure: From World Cup Fever to the Wonders of Brazil

Scents of Adventure: From World Cup Fever to the Wonders of Brazil

When the World Cup started making headlines this summer, I have to admit I wasn't paying much attention. Sports have never really been my thing. But after seeing our niece and her husband posting about the excitement surrounding the matches in Kansas City, Missouri, my curiosity finally got the better of me.

I did a little reading and discovered that Brazil has won the World Cup five times, while neighboring Argentina has claimed three championships. Instead of diving deeper into soccer statistics, my thoughts immediately wandered somewhere much more enjoyable—to the unforgettable trip David and I took to both countries.

One of the first things that always makes it into our suitcase before an international trip is fragrance.

Whenever we travel, I want to arrive with clothes that smell fresh—not like they've been sealed inside luggage for two days. My little travel secret is simple: I wrap a Belle Aroma® Bamboo Rain Scent Slice® in a paper towel and tuck it between my socks. By the time we unpack, everything has that clean, refreshing fragrance instead of the stale smell luggage sometimes develops during long flights.

For road travel once we arrived, we also packed a Belle Aroma® Scent Slides® Vent Clip. Renting a vehicle in a foreign country is exciting, but having a familiar fragrance waiting for us instantly made it feel a little more like home.

That versatility is one of the reasons Scent Slices have become one of my favorite travel companions.

Our journey began with flights from St. Louis to Miami and then on to São Paulo, Brazil. (We quickly learned the locals pronounce it "San Paulo.")

Until then, New York City had been the largest city we'd ever visited. São Paulo somehow felt even bigger. The downtown area was beautiful, modern, and full of life. As we ventured farther from the city center, we also saw the famous favelas—communities that developed as people migrated from rural areas in search of opportunity. Seeing both sides of the city gave us a much better appreciation for Brazil's culture and history.

After several days, we flew to Iguazu Falls, and nothing could have prepared us for what we experienced.

The falls were at flood stage.

The sound alone was unforgettable. Water thundered over hundreds of individual waterfalls, creating one of the most incredible natural wonders we've ever witnessed. Our guide shared the famous story about Eleanor Roosevelt supposedly saying Niagara Falls looked like a bathroom faucet. While that's more legend than fact, she did reportedly say, "My poor Niagara," after seeing Iguazu—and honestly, I understand why.

With 275 separate waterfalls stretching across nearly two miles, Iguazu is breathtaking.

Several walkways had been closed because of flooding, but we still spent the day marveling at one spectacular view after another.

From Brazil, we crossed the border into Argentina and visited Puerto Iguazú.

One of the highlights was walking through the lush Misiones rainforest before arriving at the viewing platforms overlooking Devil's Throat, the largest and most dramatic section of the falls. Standing there surrounded by the roar of rushing water is something neither of us will ever forget.

While browsing the local shops, I unexpectedly found something that brought back childhood memories.

Butterfly wing trays.

My grandfather had worked in Brazil years before and brought two of these handcrafted trays home for my grandmother. They were eventually passed down to my mother and now hang in my own living room. Seeing them again in Argentina instantly connected our family history to the very place where those treasured keepsakes originated.

Our final stop was Rio de Janeiro.

After days filled with sightseeing and adventure, Rio gave us the perfect opportunity to slow down. We spent time along beautiful Ipanema Beach, enjoyed spectacular sunsets, and simply soaked in the atmosphere.

Because Rio's tropical climate is warm and humid, I especially appreciated opening my suitcase to find every piece of clothing still smelling fresh thanks to Bamboo Rain. Somehow it seemed like the perfect fragrance for a journey through the rainforests of South America.

The World Cup may have sparked the memories, but it reminded me that some of the greatest adventures begin long before you reach your destination—and sometimes something as simple as a familiar fragrance can make every mile feel a little more like home.
