The last time we checked in, we were in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
White sand. Sunshine. Ocean air.
And one small problem.
Tosh wasn’t allowed on the beach.
We had just watched her run through the sand like she owned the place when a kind passerby let us know about the rule. Dogs are not permitted on the beaches of Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
So our next adventure began.
Finding a beach where Tosh could run — preferably one where she could enjoy the shoreline just as much as we were hoping to.
Although… if I’m being honest, Tosh isn’t exactly a social butterfly when it comes to other dogs. She’s a nine-pound Yorkshire Terrier who is fully convinced she weighs ninety pounds.
Confidence has never been her problem.
Making dog friends, on the other hand, is another story.
Still, the search was on.
A Change of Plans
When we originally booked our stay at the Iconic Island Villa, we weren’t sure how much time we would spend exploring beyond Gulf Shores. Pensacola, Florida was only a short drive away, so we kept our plans flexible and booked just three nights.
Once the dog-beach issue came to light, we decided it might be time to explore a little farther.
A quick search on Airbnb led us to a pet-friendly townhouse along a canal. The check-in was simple and smooth, and within minutes we were settling into our new surroundings.
And of course, one of the first things I unpacked was my collection of Belle Aroma® Essential Oils along with my Essential Breeze® Max Aromatherapy Fan.
Travel has a way of making every place feel temporary.
But scent?
Scent has a way of turning unfamiliar spaces into something that feels comfortable and welcoming.
Because I had packed several oils for the trip, I had plenty of options to choose from when it came time to settle in. Earlier in the journey, we had been diffusing Organic Lavender and Organic Peppermint — perfect companions for long travel days and icy highways.
Now I had a wider variety available:
Organic Fennel
Organic Lemongrass
Pure Clary Sage
Organic Sweet Orange
Pure Ylang Ylang
Pure Rose Geranium
Each oil brings its own personality and mood. Some energize. Some calm. Some simply help a space feel balanced and relaxed.
On this particular afternoon, I chose Pure Clary Sage.
Its warm, musky tea-like aroma carries subtle notes of earthiness with hints of fruit and soft florals. It’s comforting without being heavy — exactly the kind of scent that helps a new environment feel calm and settled as the Essential Breeze Max Aromatherapy Fan quietly circulated the fragrance through the room.
Even better, Clary Sage is considered safe for dogs.
Tosh had just adjusted to yet another new place, and travel can make even the most confident Yorkie a little anxious. The gentle aroma helped create a peaceful environment almost immediately.
Within minutes, the space felt calm.
Balanced.
Like home.
One thing I especially appreciate about Belle Aroma® Essential Oils is their purity. Each oil is 100% pure, with no carrier oils and no synthetic additives — just clean, natural fragrance.
A Ferry Ride and a Surprise Show
With Tosh settled and our new location secured, we set our sights on a possible dog-friendly beach across Mobile Bay.
The plan was simple.
Take the Mobile Bay Ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island.
We had heard there were public beaches there that allowed dogs, and that was all the motivation we needed.
The ferry landing sits right next to Fort Morgan, a historic site dating back to the Civil War. While David chatted with other travelers waiting in line, I wandered around exploring parts of the fort — including the old hospital building and the First Sergeant’s quarters.
History has a way of quietly reminding you how many stories a place can hold.
Soon it was time to board.
The ferry ride was expected to take about 45 minutes, and we had a perfect view from the edge of the deck as we moved steadily across the water.
Then the ferry slowed.
And stopped.
The engine was still running, so there was no concern about mechanical trouble. In the distance we could see why we were waiting.
An enormous oil tanker was crossing directly in front of us.
Watching something that massive glide through the water was impressive enough.
But what happened next was even better.
A pod of dolphins appeared.
They leapt through the waves and played in the wake of the tanker, clearly enjoying the easy meal of fish stirred up by the ship’s passage. Seeing them so close and so completely at home in their environment was one of those unexpected travel moments you never forget.
Nature’s own welcome committee.
Wind, Waves, and a Perfect Afternoon
Once we arrived at Dauphin Island, we headed toward the beach.
The area is rich in history, with the Fort Gaines tunnels and cannons having played an important part in protecting Mobile in the Civil War. But if I’m honest?
The beach was calling.
We walked all the way around the point, where the Gulf stretched endlessly toward the horizon.
The wind was strong that afternoon, but the sun was bright and warm — the kind of combination that makes you lose track of time.
Dolphins appeared again in the distance.
Seabirds drifted across the sky.
At one point we even spotted a large jellyfish drifting in the surf.
Tosh ran happily along the shoreline, exploring every inch of sand she could find.
Mission accomplished.
After several hours of sunshine and salty air, we made our way back to the ferry and returned to our townhouse for the evening.
A Quiet Evening and Coastal Comfort
Back at the townhouse, the relaxing aroma of Pure Clary Sage essential oil welcomed us.
After a full day of fresh air and beach exploration, Tosh was more than ready to settle down for the night.
She curled up in her crate and quickly drifted off to sleep.
Sometimes the most peaceful moments of travel are the quiet ones — when the day slows down, and the memories start to settle in.

Dinner by the Gulf
With Tosh resting comfortably, we headed next door to Acme Oyster House for dinner.
When you’re near the Gulf, seafood simply feels like the right choice.
We started with smoked tuna dip and chargrilled oysters topped with parmesan cheese. David ordered the grilled Cobia platter, while I chose a steaming bowl of seafood gumbo.
And of course, no Gulf Coast meal feels complete without key lime pie.
So we shared a slice.
Because some traditions are worth keeping.
