We managed to squeeze in a trip to Iowa to visit family before the snow flies. Although, according to the Farmers' Almanac, we may not have much snow this year. No complaints here! Whatever winter has in store, we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to travel.

A couple of hours later, we decided to take a slight detour to see another Missouri lake, Mark Twain Lake, near Hannibal.

Missouri certainly has its share of beautiful lakes, and this one is no exception. With opportunities for boating, swimming, hiking, and camping, it's a place we might want to revisit next summer with our camper.

This time, we were content to drive across the Clarence Cannon Dam and admire the clear water.

Of course, we made a stop to let Tosh stretch her little legs before continuing north.

Traveling with Tosh

If you know anything about Yorkies, you know they can be rather high-strung. Tosh is no exception!

She's actually a very good traveler. She doesn't whine, fidget, or get carsick, and she generally settles in nicely for a long drive. I enjoy having the lavender fragrance in the car because it makes the atmosphere feel peaceful and pleasant.

Now, that's not to say Tosh doesn't occasionally announce her presence to someone walking along the road. After all, in her mind, every road, sidewalk, and street belongs to HER!

But for the most part, we all enjoy our travels together.

One important note for anyone traveling with pets: Essential oils aren't necessarily safe for every animal. Pet owners should check with their veterinarian before using oils around their pets, keep the diffuser away from the animal's immediate breathing space, and maintain good ventilation.

A Hidden Treasure in Fairfield, Iowa

Once we reached Iowa, we enjoyed catching up with family and friends. While there, we made a short trip to Fairfield, where we discovered a real treasure: the Carnegie Historical Museum.

What a delightful experience!

The museum offers free tours, and ours was given by Jake, the curator himself. The exhibits cover not only the history of Jefferson County but also fascinating items from around the world, including collections shared by the Smithsonian Institution.

Jake is incredibly knowledgeable, and his enthusiasm for the museum is contagious. You can tell he truly loves what he does.

It's one of those unexpected discoveries that makes traveling so enjoyable. We'll definitely keep it on our list for another visit.
