We thought heading home would be simple.

After a full week of clear skies along the Gulf, the morning we packed up to leave, it rained. Not a downpour—just enough to remind us that every leg of a journey has its own mood.

And honestly, after digging ourselves out of eight inches of snow just to start this trip, a little rain felt like nothing at all.

Preparing for the Ride Home

There’s something about the end of a trip—when all you want is your own bed, your own routine, your own version of comfort. No more suitcases. No more fried food. Just home.

But we still had miles to go.

So before we pulled out, I reached for something we’ve come to rely on—peppermint.

About an hour outside of Tupelo, the rain finally let up. The skies softened. And suddenly, the ride felt different—less like a race home and more like a chance to enjoy the road we were on.

Neither of us had ever been to Tupelo, so instead of rushing through, we decided to lean into it.

We made our way to downtown—historic buildings, locally owned shops, and that unmistakable feeling of a place with stories to tell. Some of those businesses have been there for over a century, quietly standing the test of time.

And then, of course, there’s the story Tupelo is known for.

The birthplace of Elvis Presley.

We learned about the hardware store that’s been in the same family for over 120 years—the one tied to a story that feels almost too perfect to be true. A young boy—Elvis Presley—wants a rifle for his birthday. His mother says no. The shop owner places a guitar in his hands instead.

And just like that… history may have shifted.

Whether legend or fact, it’s the kind of story that makes a stop like this memorable.

A Simple Stop, A Lasting Impression

We didn’t stay long—just a couple of hours. Enough to explore, take it in, and know we’d want to come back someday.

By then, we were ready to settle in for the night at a nearby Airbnb.

Tosh was more than ready to stretch her legs, and we were ready to slow things down.

Once inside our Airbnb, I reached for the one thing that instantly transforms any space into something familiar.
