California has a way of calling you back—coastlines that stretch for miles, towering forests, and destinations that feel almost surreal in their beauty.

A few days ago, I heard from my cousin in Riverside County. The Springs Fire was burning closer than anyone felt comfortable with—just 7 to 8 miles from their home. At the time, it had already consumed thousands of acres, and while evacuation orders hadn’t been issued, the possibility was very real.

Thankfully, as the days passed, containment improved, and no lives were lost. But the lingering challenge wasn’t flames—it was the air. Smoke hung heavy, making something as simple as breathing uncomfortable.

But one trip took us inland.

We flew into Sacramento, planning to visit friends and explore parts of California we hadn’t seen before. Lake Tahoe was high on the list.

What we didn’t plan for… was smoke.

By the time we arrived, the air was so thick we couldn’t even see the water. One of the most beautiful lakes in the country—completely hidden behind a haze of wildfire smoke.

It was worth the wait.

 

Looking Ahead to the Next Adventure

Lake Tahoe is definitely on our list to revisit—only next time, we may aim for a different season. Maybe winter, when the air is crisp and clear, and the landscape takes on a completely different kind of beauty.

One thing I know for sure…
